6 Celebrities Who Chose Celibacy Before It Was a Trend

As the trend of rejecting hookup culture grows, being a "volcel," a voluntarily celibate, is becoming more popular. As a result, more and more people are openly discussing their choice to abstain from sex and be come celibate or in TikTok terms: boysober. While the trend is gaining popularity, there are quite a few celebrities who have been vocal about this choice for years.

Everyone can have their own personal reason for abstaining from sex. For example, Insecure's Yvonne Orji has had a number of sex scenes on the hit HBO show, but still chooses to abstain from sex until marriage in her personal life. Justin Bieber also abstained from sex before meeting his future wife, Hailey Bieber, as a way to rededicate himself to God.

Ciara

Ciara and her then-fiancee, Russell Wilson, chose to abstain from sex until they were married. They shared that it was a challenge, but it allowed them to focus on their foundation of friendship before committing their lives to each other.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj swore off of sex and relationships in 2017 after a toxic relationship. She also encouraged her Barbs to follow suit.

Lady Gaga

Like Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga encouraged her fans to practice celibacy. Her reasons, however, were due to wanting to remain single and not having time for sexual connection. But she did share in an interview with Daily Mail, "You don't have to have sex to feel good about yourself, and if you're not ready, don't do it."

Adriana Lima

Adriana Lima, one of Victoria's Secret's prime sex symbols, made the conscious decision to abstain from sex until she wed in 2009.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber chose to abstain from sex for personal reasons and continued his abstinence when he started dating Hailey Bieber. They chose to continue abstaining until they wed in 2018.

Julia Fox

A new discovery, Fox recently unveiled that she's been celibate. "Two and a half years of celibacy and never been better tbh," she tweeted.
