Chloé Zhao Makes History as First Woman of Color to Win "Best Director"

Along with Minari's Youn Yuh-jung, Chloé Zhao has made history at the 93rd Academy Awards, winning "Best Director" for her film Nomadland. The creative is now the first woman of color, and the second woman ever, to have won the title. In addition to the award, Zhao is the first woman to receive four Oscar nominations in a year.

This year marked the first where two women were in the running for the title. The director said in her acceptance speech: "This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold out to the goodness in themselves and to hold out to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that. You inspire me to keep going."

For those who have yet to watch the film, Nomadland is a story of older Americans living a nomadic lifestyle in their vehicles. Premiered in September 2020 at the Venice Film Festival, it has received six nominations at the Oscars and won four titles at the 74th British Academy Film Awards.
