Chanel Loses Court Fight With Huawei Over Similar Logos

Chanel has lost a European Union court battle with Huawei, which sought trademark protection for a logo the French fashion house deemed too similar to its interlocking Cs.

In 2017, Chinese tech company Huawei applied for EU trademark protection for a logo to be used on computer hardware. The emblem features two intertwining U-shaped lines, a design Chanel believed was too similar to its logo, which is protected under intellectual property. "The marks at issue share some similarities but their visual differences are significant," the EU General Court in Luxembourg ruled. "In particular, Chanel’s marks have more rounded curves, thicker lines and a horizontal orientation, whereas the orientation of the Huawei mark is vertical."

Chanel hasn't commented on the ruling, which can be appealed. Head to BBC News to compare the logos for yourself.
