1 in 5 Women Have Struggled to Access Abortion Care

Sexual wellness and reproductive health provider, Wisp, reveals its "State of Reproductive Health" trend report.

The 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade altered the lives of people with uteruses leaving abortion care available in only 28 out of 50 states, and banned in 13 states. Aiming to understand the effects of the ruling, Wisp surveyed 1,500 women across the United, spanning ages 18 to 45.

According to Wisp's report, Gen Z women are the most unhappy about their reproductive healthcare options, in comparison to other generations. "1 in 5 women said they have struggled to access pregnancy prevention and 14 percent of women said they have struggled to access emergency contraception." These women noted the largest barriers to abortion care were cost concerns and legal restrictions.

Geographically, people in the Northeast "feel most negative about the state of access to women’s reproductive healthcare compared to those in the West, Midwest and South, respectively. Specifically, women in the South feel most positive about access to reproductive care. As for contraception, birth control and condoms remain the leading forms of protection despite new methods like the patch and ring.
