The Creator of ‘Black Mirror’ Is Worried About AI...

Ahead of Black Mirror's Season 6 premiere, the show's creator, Charlie Booker, discusses the use of AI within our futures.

After failing to use ChatGPT to create an episode of the hit Netflix show, Booker sat with WIRED and discussed the "sh-t" experience. As a creator who clearly has a third eye veering into the trends and futures of humans, the interviewer asked Booker about his concerns for AI -- considering many are already thinking the concept has us f-cked.

"Society’s worries tend to shift over time: AI, climate change, and the threat of nuclear war... Black Mirror has always been pretty good at predicting what the next thing we should worry about should be. What are you worried about now that we’ll be worrying about in 10 years’ time?"

To no surprise Booker replied, "disinformation" and "misinformation." However, these are simply his short term fears. In regard to long term effects of AI, Booker wants to know "what people do when they’re afraid and misinformed."

Booker draws a comparison to "the unfunny end of that image of the Pope in a puffer jacket that went viral a few weeks ago." The photo caught social media by surprise and made people wonder: when the f-ck did the Pope learn how to "put that sh-t on" for lack of a better term. But it turned out to have been generated by an AI.

"You can obviously see what happens when stuff like that is weaponized, and that’s going to be coming very soon. That’s terrifying, because some of the gatekeepers don’t seem to give a shit or are actively encouraging that. So that frightens me — what people do when they’re afraid and misinformed. This is depressing isn’t it? That is probably going to be our biggest challenge over the next 10 years."

As for any remaining predictions, Booker predicts "all the rest of it: climate, nukes, you name it."
