Dancing has always held a special place in Michella Bredahl's heart and practice. For her latest project, the Danish filmmaker and visual artist has teamed up with celebrated stylist Lotta Volkova to create a new series of images. Together, they captured women pole dancing in their homes and studios, dressed in Miu Miu's Fall/Winter 2024 collection.

Bredahl is a passionate pole dancing practitioner herself, and her nuanced understanding of the craft shines through in the limited-edition book, titled everyth!ng 001, designed by creative director Bruce Usher and published by everyth!ng publishing. By photographing women in intimate spaces, wearing a juxtaposition of high-fashion garments and personal pieces, she and Volkova show pole dancing as a powerful form of artistic expression, blurring the lines between movement, fashion and performance art.

"I photographed pole dancers for years because a lot of my friends are into it," explains Bredahl in the project's press release. "Some of them are the best in the world, so it has seemed natural for me to explore it more. I would go pole dancing with my friend and then we would shoot."

Fans of Bredahl's will know her work has long celebrated pole dancing and explored its transformation over time. With roots tracing back to ancient China and India, pole dancing evolved through circus performances in the 19th century before becoming associated with strip clubs and exotic dance in the 1920's. In recent years, it has been redefined as a legitimate form of fitness and performance art, shedding its sexualized connotations.

everyth!ng 001 by Michella Bredahl and Lotta Volkova is available for purchase on IDEA books' website, Dover Street Market London, Dover Street Market New York and Haven Surf, Antwerp. Only 300 copies are available.
