TikTok's Viral Couples Trend Is Anything But Casual

TikTok has a new couples trend -- and it’s nothing but casual.

Tapping Chappell Roan’s hit song, "Casual," women on TikTok are leading a new trend: casual things their partner's did when they first started dating. In just a few weeks, it amassed over 200,000 videos with carousels of couples and their cute origin stories. As the trend grew in popularity, each viral video seemed to be the opposite of relaxed.

"Literally nothing, we started dating after our first date, got a dog, moved in together and never separated again," one user shared. "Not a thing. They drove hours to meet me for the first time" and "we slept on the phone together every night," another TikTok user wrote.

Of course, following the virality of any moment, it was only a matter of time before people started questioning the safety of it. Were we romanticizing love-bombing? Were these couples held together by the fact that they moved too fast?

Those not chronically online — or actual certified therapists — may have never heard of the term. It refers to a form of emotional manipulation, where one partner lavishes the other in attempt to gain control over them. This can manifest as excessive gift giving, saying "I love you" on the first date and anything that screams "We're moving way too fast."

Soon, the comments section was equal parts swooning over cute couples, while simultaneously questioning just how healthy a quick coupling could be.

Thankfully, the trend is now being taken over by best-friend duos sharing origin stories of their own.

In other news, are 'friends who kiss' the new 'friends with benefits'?"
