Raven Irabor Explores Breakups and Healing via 'Last Night I Cried....'

Los Angeles-based artist, Raven Irabor, discusses her latest exhibition on love, breakups and healing.

Inspired by heartbreak and SZA's emotive "S.O.S." album, Last Night I Cried....Unveiling Liminal Spaces is Irabor's "sanctuary for women navigating heartbreak," she shared. "SZA's album became my refuge during an emotional breakup in 2022." Delivering an unwavering and "unapologetic expression of emotions, particularly anger," SZA's cries mirrored Irabor's own journey and encouraged her to feel what was underneath the surface.

"I'd never heard a young Black woman express anger so openly and honestly," she continued. "This is possibly due to the fact that there's so much shame around experiencing and expressing anger and heartbreak, particularly for women of color." SZA's fearfulness in her message encouraged the LA-based artist to face her feelings and courageously name the collection, Last Night I Cried....Unveiling Liminal Spaces.

Hoping to foster the same journey for women of color, Irabor brought the collection to life at Los Angeles' 90220. A Black-owned gallery that for the month of May, "transformed into a community space for healing." Featuring portrait photography, audio files and a film, the immersive exhibit led the viewer through the many complex feelings love can bring.

"Everything about this exhibition feels like a continuous cycle of art inspiring art, using art as a modality of healing and hope. My vision was to offer solace and communal healing for women of color navigating heartbreak, and I am immensely honored and deeply grateful that it succeeded in doing just that!"
