Megan thee Stallion Accused of Queer Baiting

Following the release of her new album MEGAN, Megan thee Stallion faces social media backlash regarding her sexuality .

"This habit of adopting bisexuality for the sake of appealing to your LGBT fanbase while never actually dating women is so weird to me," a fan shared in a now-deleted tweet. "And yes it was weird when Doja [Cat] and Nicki Minaj did it too."

However, fans of thee Stallion know she's never been mute about her sexuality. In a 2022 Caresha Please interview, she joined City Girls member, Yung Miami in a discussion about bisexuality. "Girls are so sensual," Stallion shared at the time. She continued jokingly, "But I feel like girl sex can last like two days."

The tea dates back even further, however, with the "WAP" rapper proudly reminding fans she's queer on "Captain Hook." "I be texting with a bi chick, we both freaky, just trying shit (Mwah)," she rapped.

As Cardi B shared in a 2021 tweet, accusing musicians of queer baiting is a double-edged sword. "I don’t like this new 'queer baiting' word. I feel like it pressures artists to talk about their sexuality or their experiences that they don’t feel comfortable speaking about. If an artist kissed a girl on a video does that means she gotta show videos and text with other women?"

The Houston rapper isn't the first to be accused of queer baiting. In 2023, Puerto Rican musician, Bad Bunny, was accused of performing queerness due to his fluid style. He responded in a Vanity Fair interview, "You don’t know the reasons why a person is wearing that," he said. "You weren’t in his mind when he decided to put on a skirt or a blouse. You don’t know what’s inside him, what’s in his heart. You do it because you want to and it makes you feel good and it makes you feel happy."

Queer baiting has become a highly controversial topic amongst people of all identities as it appears to be progressive but is merely a trap to hook queer audiences without actually being progressive. In the case of Bad Bunny, he's currently Kar-Jenner clan member Kendall Jenner and has never been pictured out with anyone queer, causing the public to question his intentions. But on the flip side, what makes any of us the authority on anyone's sexuality?

It's clear that there's a protective nature amongst us within the queer community -- but as seen with the discourse surrounding Megan thee Stallion, it can quickly become biphobic.
