According to a report by MacWorld, Apple has been approved to patent more a flexible, durable version of its Lightening charging cable. Addressing a common problem among its customers, the new cords will be less prone to fraying and breakage.

The patent, simply called "cable with varied flexibility," suggests using various types of polymers to increase flexibility and prevent breaks. It also states that the additional piece of plastic at the end of the Lightening cable, originally introduced to prevent fraying, doesn't actually work. Interestingly, Apple's 2021 iPhone model is rumored to do away with a Lightening port, entirely eliminating the need for charging cables going forward.
