Blue Origin, the commercial spaceflight company founded by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, sold the first seat on its maiden voyage for $28 million USD at auction. The anonymous winner -- whose identity will be revealed in the coming weeks -- will join Bezos and his brother, Mark, on the landmark flight next month.

Last week, the Amazon executive announced that he and his brother will occupy two seats on Blue Origin's inaugural spaceflight on the New Shepard, a suborbital rocket that holds six people. The remaining seats will be auctioned off over the next few weeks. Blue Origin will donate all $28 million USD from the sale of its first New Shepard seat to Club for the Future, the company's non-profit that encourages youth to pursue careers in STEM.
