Troye Sivan is starring in the forthcoming HBO series The Idol. Though Sivan has previous acting experience, his role on The Idol signaled a shift for him.

"It was the first time in my life when I really felt like an actor," he told Elle in a new interview. "I've got my day job of being a musician, and then when something exciting comes along that I’m interested in or that I feel challenged by, which is pretty much every acting thing ever, I’m so excited to throw my hat in the ring and see what happens without this stress and pressure."

Sivan plays Caleb, who's Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp)'s friend. Though Jocelyn and Caleb are close on the show, that also seems to be the case with the actors in real life. "There was not a single time where it was my close-up or someone else’s close-up, where she wasn’t behind the camera giving 1,000 percent after she’s just already given 1,000 percent on her coverage and knocked it out of the park," he said in admiration for Depp's work ethic. "She’s an incredible person to work with, so I feel very lucky to have her in my life."

Sivan previously opened up about what makes The Idol so unique. "There’s so many musicians on this project—I think it’s really real," he told Interview magazine. "I love being in the know, and fortunately or unfortunately, I feel like I’ve come across most of these characters in real life. The Idol is batshit crazy, but so is the music industry."

The Idol premieres on HBO on June 4.
