Pamela Anderson's 'Baywatch' Swimsuit Will Be Displayed at This New Exhibition
info@hypebae.com (Hypebae) Mon, 13 Jan 2025 HypebaeThere are many reasons why Pamela Anderson's red swimsuit from Baywatch is iconic. Halloween costumes, holiday style inspiration, and general Anderson obsession aside, the design itself also marked a pretty big shift within the world of swimwear. That shift is something that London's Design Museum will soon be exploring, through a brand-new exhibition dubbed "Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style."
Opening in March 2025, the exhibition will chart swimwear's unique evolution over the past 100 years, from the U.K.'s first lido in the 20th century to the recent Mermaidcore trend that made waves post-pandemic. Along with Anderson's red swimsuit, the exhibition will feature pieces like the first Olympic solo swimming gold medal won by a British woman and the banned 'technical doping' LZR Racer swimsuit, plus one of the earliest surviving examples of a bikini.
In total, the exhibition will feature over 200 objects from 50 lenders across Europe, spanning three in-depth sections: the pool, the lido and nature. Exploring design's role in shaping our relationship with swimming, the exhibition will begin in the 1920s, looking at swimwear's more functional usage and exploring its transition to style symbol, whilst looking at how it influences and subverts "our ideas of body autonomy and agency."
Take a look at some of the pieces soon to be on display above and head to the Design Museum website for more information.
