When it comes to trends and music, the 2000s have been back for a while, and that can clearly be seen in Mahalia and JoJo's new music video for "Cheat."

The one-of-a-kind collaboration uses fashion and technology from the late '90s and early aughts. Additionally, the sound is simultaneously modern and nostalgic, especially as it seeks inspiration from Brandy and Monica's 1998 collab "The Boy Is Mine," according to Mahalia's recent Instagram post.

Of the new collab, Mahalia said in a press release, "I can’t quite believe this one is real. I have been a fan of JoJo for as long as I can remember so having her on this record really is a dream come true for me. I love watching people come together through hardship and everything about this song represents that. For me, it is a song about strength, power, and letting go."

JoJo added, "I loved teaming up with Mahalia on this fully infectious bop. Not only can I not get the melodies out of my head… but I've been there. And it feels good to be singing with my friend about this very real part of growing up: Realizing that some boys are for the streets and will never change."

The collab is the second single of Mahalia's upcoming sophomore album, IRL, out July 14. Check out the music video for "Cheat" above.
