American tennis player Coco Gauff has tested positive for COVID-19 and will no longer be able to attend the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

"It has always been a dream of mine to represent the USA at the Olympics, and I hope there will be many more chances for me to make this come true in the future," the 17-year-old shared on Twitter. "I want to wish Team USA best of luck and a safe Games for every Olympian and the entire Olympic family."

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) responded to the announcement, stating that they are considering replacing Gauff on the Team USA roster. "The entire USA Tennis Olympic contingent is heartbroken for Coco. We wish her the best as she deals with this unfortunate situation and hope to see her back on the courts very soon," the association's statement read.

A number of athletes in the Olympic Village have already tested positive, including beach volleyball and soccer players. Despite concerns, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is set to commence this Friday, July 23. To participate in the Games, Team USA athletes are not required to get vaccinated.
