After three years, COVID-19 is no longer considered a worldwide threat.

After discussing the pandemic in a recent meeting, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an end to the public health emergency of international concern, or PHEIC, relating to COVID-19.

"For more than a year the pandemic has been on a downward trend," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a conference on Friday, May 5. "

He continued, "This trend has allowed most countries to return to life as we knew it before Covid-19. Yesterday, the emergency committee met for the 15th time and recommended to me that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice."

According to CNN, "a PHEIC creates an agreement between countries to abide by WHO's recommendations for managing the emergency. Each country, in turn, declares its own public health emergency -- declarations that carry legal weight. Countries use them to marshal resources and waive rules in order to ease a crisis."

As a result, starting on May 11, the US will no longer consider COVID-19 a public health emergency.
