Mercedes Moves up: 2 seater to scare the Bentley - S63 AMG Coupe

Mercedes has always been a player, and maybe the ultimate player in the luxury market. It has stretched its arms from low end to high end formidably maneuvering the market with a combination of sporty and highway cruising SUV's and sedans that we see on a daily basis. Well we know the known but now we touch on the unknown there are levels to luxury, and there is a step above a Mercedes and the competitors in these range all have a background in England in what I call the Ultra Luxury Cruiser

  • Bentley
  • Aston Martin
  • Rolls Royce

Mercedes in the past has attempted to cross the bounds with 4 door Ultra Luxury Cruisers but they changed the name in the past. One iteration of this was the Maybach when it was first released known as the top sedan and the "Welcome I'm Rich" vehicle for all of the Hollywood Stars. The Maybach has been discontinued as a separate entity but many of the cues can be found in the Mercedes S63 AMG sedan. The problem, well with 4 doors means you need two doors and Benz has a history of making some great one's but none that could quite get in the mix with the trio born out of the UK. Some of the predecessors where the S500 coupe and CL models. So as Benz continues to lead the luxury market we see an incoming of a move up instead of down. An ode to the old CL models but with a crest upward introducing the S63 AMG Coupe the first pass at another level of class.

To start if first impressions are everything than the swooping slight overhang, long bonnet, sexy back end look of the S63 will make you consider kneeling down and taking out a wedding ring. The car is a delight to look at and on another level from Benz's of yester year. To add to the emotion, engineers made this car a bit more sporty knocking off 128lb from the curb weight and a new air suspension ride to AWD system that includes ADS PLUS (adaptive dampening system), and specific front axle kinematics that include large anti-roll bars and a stiffer subframe with enhanced Cambers for a more agile luxury cruiser.  The new tool Magic Body Control ride control available in Europe only for now with the rear wheel drive configuration which is not offered in North America. Never got that, there are less places with snow in USA vs Europe but I can understand the decision to hold off bringing the rear wheel drive vehicle until later on in the development cycle.

Powering the specially revised suspension is what AMG's claim to fame is the beautiful sounding, monster torque when I mean monster put it on the thruster for a Nasa mission this thing may lift off Columbia are powered by the well renowned 5.5-liter twin turbocharged beast. The specifications are scary but believe me are controllable for this compact yacht 577hp and 664lb paired with the Multiclutch 7 speed pull this thing to a limited 186 mph, 60 in 3.8 seconds with a 120 mph 1/4 mile in the low twelves. Lets not forgot the weight this thing it comes in at nearly 2.5 tons. So sexy can move, it looks good on the outside but for me it's the inside that counts let's get sentimental...

Next line honey I could be with you forever the interior puts the exclamation point to the overall package soft touch nappa leather, large futuristic dials, and ergonomics. The magic continues given you the feeling like your in a theatre, truly in certain colors you couldn't imagine this to be real. Thank you Mercedes, for having the balls to put the concept to reality. When we talk about cohesive transitions the way the car interlocks with all of its functions, the touches of class with the  AMG emblems truly creates a home away from home.

In all can this get to the Bentley if you took away the name, yes. There is still something about the exoticness of the british that may taint the over all snob appeal of this vehicle but it is a car that can compete and we thank Mercedes for not trying but trying to win.
