Range Rover Sport SVR 2016: The English Omnipotent

Off Road Yes, On Road Yes, faster than your base Porshe cayman GT4 to sixty ...really close. What we have here is the Gentleman’s Predator the car that can go in the jungle swing through the trees with ease and then disappear in the city and sit unbenounced next to your local european cafe near the Porshe Cayenne. The SVR is the pumped up version of the Range Rover Sport it slots as the second highest model you can get in the Range Rover line up and fills the void for the high volume midsized SUV market as most folks have downsized or live in areas where a Range Rover doesn’t make sense. So why the need for the pump up when the sport is already fast enough for the city or highway, well to truly have come into this crowded market you will need a “doesn’t make sense vehicle”. The vehicle that crowd enthusiasts long for but normal buyers just ask WHY...in the rise of jaguar land rover these “Why” cars were missing from their line ups that’s when the SVR division was created to counter the AMG’s, M’s, Turbo S, RS, F, V, brands from the car makers looking to be a staple in all spectrums of the market place.

So let’s get into what the SVR is in normal faction Macheene will split the SUV up into a few categories

Categories:
  • Wind and Turn - Ability to corner and it’s fun factor
  • Right Foot Down left foot cut off
  • Victorian Nights - When you’re all dressed up does the car dress you up more
  • Earthquake Suitable - Off Road Capabilities
  • Daily/Special/Rent - Should you buy it, treasure it, or lease it and give it back

Wind and Turn:
Immediately jumping into the vehicle and traveling along the roadways you feel the tighter suspension the ride quality doesn’t suffer but the confidence is inspiring. Now let me halt and say that this car will not win the award for trackhawk but with its dual personality there is no doubt from track to the dirt this is the best balance of all on the market. So how does Land Rover pull off the 1.3 G of peak cornering G Force its starts with the set up a double wishbone up front and multi-link suspension in the rear (same set u found in the Chevorlet Corvette. The driver feel is connected through the use of Electric Power-Assisted Steering EPAS, this system allows for more weight to be added when you reach the 3 digits in speed. No Electronic steering as of yet so the hydraulic (THANK YOU HEAVENS) is still the defacto steering mode. To enable a brick to remain flat in a turn the teams had to the car good sneakers due to its two mode personality the options are a 275/45 R21 tyre and a 295/40 R22 Tire in which the extra inch optimizes everything.

Like the magnetic ride control dampers found in cadillac range rover has a similar damper system with a smart computer able to adapt 1000 times per second, with the use of two actuators instead of one to optimize efficiency. The smarts continue when a tree falls down and you somehow need to test the off road conditions when it reverts back to the off road capability of it’s punier twin the range rover sport. The nurburing also helped in channeling the dynamic dual personality of the vehicle channeling its inner sports coupe turning the Nurburing in 8 min 14 seconds. In all the rank is simply 4 out of 5 cities , this is the best dual personality on the market but if you compare to lets say a Porshe cayenne turbo, or bmw X5 there is a bit more of a want.

Right Foot Down left foot cut off:
If engine sound was all that matter in life, thank you Jaguar Land Rover this is another return of the Cracken, Crackling exhausts SUV that will put tremble to a downtown near you. The thing makes you laugh as you exit corners and press full throttle as your neighbors wonder if a jet has farted the way the SUV passes by carrying 4 adults. It really helps that the Range Rover is 39% percent lighter than its predecessor with its all aluminum Chassis. 5.0 Liter V8 adds the extra slap to move this SUV with my right foot to 4.3 seconds to 60 with a ¼ mile time of 114 mph. The scary thing about well balanced chassis is that when you reach the 3 digits it feels like you’re still in the two digits. This tanker can reach speeds of 162mph, and being supercharged the heat can rack up, no worries to the imprint of my heal there are big vents up front that allow for airflow to run through the aircoolers which maintains performance in extreme conditions. So after a couple of crackle’s I looked up how they made this thing sound so damn good. Well usually there is a cut off on an over run in this case there is no cut off so those crackles are kinda like fuel choking the result is menacing essentially rattling the streets to go into hiding, 5/5 cities.

Listen Below:

As the hood looks like it’s coming to my face on the next straight away I realize that this car is shifting pretty nicely the power band can always be found and the 8 speed was a close as it gets for a dual clutch which I don’t think you can use for off - road surfaces. It is a seamless transition between gears the shorter ratios allow for quick shifts up to 120 mph where the brick well it’s a brick going 120 mph any more questions on that. The great thing about a car is you can learn it, but this one try’s to learn you with the adaptive shift strategy that has 25 programs to antiquated with how your right foot likes to trigger speed. On the track it gets more fun you know how you sometimes want to hold a gear well a manual allows you to do that on your own there is a manual mode here as well but this car will hold the gears with its corner recognition technology. Downshifting is handled through active throttle recognition which auto blips during high speeds in addition if you have to overtake its smart enough to realize this through swapping down into a lower gear for acceleration. In all for the Right Foot the Range Rover gets a 5/5 cities not for us crazy speeds but for the noise it makes that alone gave it 2 points.

Victorian Nights:
If looks were the only precursor the Range Rover steals the show as the best looking SUV because to me it still looks like an SUV. The car has adjustable ride height and the 22in wheels fit the vehicle perfectly. With a Range Rover evoque like stance this car truly stands out in a parking lot of SUV’s. Looks are subjective but there are somethings that there is no denying and that is looks of the SVR. How does this separate from the normal Range Rover Sport with a larger bumper, new fender side moulding, rear spoiler , topped off with 22in multi spoke wheels and 4 exhaust pipes to make sure you know this car plays the part.

When you peak in you get a touch of luxury and technology mix. The layout is actually perfectly driver centric the soft leathers abound and the seat architecture is one of the best in the game. Sitting in the SVR you feel special one of the most prominent things on a vehicle is the interior and this is vehicle that wins. THe Range has been updated with the latest tech amenities if there is one gripe why not make the controls are large glass like the Tesla for a full screen display. Other than that for the interior its a 4/5 cities.

Earthquake Suitable:
Bar none there is no other SUV that has this packaging that can take the off-road other than a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT and even that has limitations. If there is a rock you can get over it, just as you could get over it in the Range Rover Sport. This car was meant to do this and range rover is not sacrificing extreme performance to let this go hence why it sports much of the same dimensions. No need to detail this areas range rover has the ability to travel from Europe to Asia straight through mountains, sand dunes, and all. A two speed fully synchronised shift in the transfer case allows for immediately low crawl speed, with a 1:1 high drive ratio and low range 2:93:1 makes it believable. 5/5 cities

In summary the Range Rover Sport SVR is the top SUV on the market place for dual personalities. If the aggressive changes are not enough check out Urban Automotive they have just made a custom specification kit to take the Range even more aesthically pleasing. See if you can differentiate the changes above in the picture chart.
