Why does safety have to be so sexy: Volvo

Volvo has been the silent assassin for so long camouflaged in the mountains of Sweden known in the market as the safety first brand of the car industry. Up until recently they were on a small tear showcasing their sporty design with the R badge affixed to their sedans. The attempt to shake there overtones of being safety and family to being sporty, safety, and family reborn in a new era filled with high horsepower vehicles adept carving canyons with the little ones in back asking to change the DVD movie because it’s over.

The newest expo of this change of traditionalism is the XC90. The saying ‘far to long” is an understatement the previous car had been literally unchanged for over 10 years. When Volvo announced the redesign I can tell you all were ecstatic about the new changes to married with 2 kids all over the world. Being reborn is a great thing, but the XC90 is now reborn ten times greater let’s take a look at the specifications. I sometimes hate to use pictures from the Volvo sites and want to give a real world look at vehicles so I made a stop to the Volvo dealership and got the firsthand look at the T6 R design.

Let’s get a handle on Volvo development the XC90 is a result of the 11 billion dollar investment that created what future Volvo’s will come to know as Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) modular chassis technology. On this handsome SUV you have three trim levels for all the variants from T6 to T8 these include

• Momentum – Your standard variant
• Inscription – Luxury focused
• R-Design – Sport Focused

The new chassis allowed for designers to get a little risky and be able to evolve the design to a new plateau one that keeps the distinct Volvo shoulder line while modernizing the physique to a new more modern standard. Volvo makes the choices easy everything comes with AWD and the new 8 speed geartronic transmission (over drive modes for gas savings). The chassis come with the new advanced technology of making changes to the dampers and air suspension keeps the ride comfortable while tumbling over snow dunes in Michigan or mud crawls in the Florida swamps.

With all of the chassis and engine improvements one couldn’t miss the opportunity to comment on the interior. What a gem it is and already I rank this as the best interiors on an SUV for 2016. This is not because of the cool tricks that Audi and Jag use with pop up speakers or drive control modules. This interior is simplistic but of high grade. The technology includes a Sensus Audio and Navigation System / Sensus Connect Technology to summarize in one sentence “Endless cloud based accessible technology through a 12.3 in touchscreen control panel with all the latest technology that can be updated” this verbiage will continue with all car makers.
Now we come to Volvo’s cu de gra and that’s the Safety along believe after each one of these line items there is a paragraph so I will summarize at my best (means I may miss some of the detail)

• Need to pack groceries how about hands free trunk opening with a capability of lowering the height of the vehicle to make it easier to load
• Sensus platform essentially there IPAD, no manual needed jump in and you will understand it
• Intellisafe and City Safe features that allow constant car monitoring including stopping before collision one of many features in this group. Autonomous braking is the key word here.
• Run off road protection: tired or you’re going to be cut off on the road this will be your silent helper to keep you safe
• BLIS cross traffic or blind spot monitoring to the next level
• ACC – Adaptive cruise control and lane assist “Autonomous Driving”

In two words the Volvo is GRYMT BRA, aka awesome. For more details on the vehicle or help in purchasing send email to automotive@macheene.com
