Vivienne Westwood Just Hosted Its First-Ever Fashion Show in India
info@hypebae.com (Hypebae) Wed, 02 Apr 2025 HypebaeVivienne Westwood just hosted its first-ever fashion show in India, transporting guests to the historic Gateway -- aka the same venue where Dior held its own showcase back in 2023. Aiming to celebrate the rich textile heritage of the country, the showcase was held in partnership with the Department of Textiles, the government of Maharashtra and the Vivz Fashion School.
Building on the brand's evolving relationship with India, the show followed its recent "Sun" collection campaign, shot in Mumbai in collaboration with Kshitij Kankaria. The location choice was also reportedly inspired by the CEO's visit to India last year and previous travels to Goa back in the '70s.

Presenting a slew of Spring/Summer 2025 looks along with special archive pieces, the showcase also featured a capsule collection of couture looks crafted with hand-woven Chanderi silks and Khadi cotton. The specific cotton was popularized by Mahatma Gandhi back in 1918, associated with freedom and resistance in India. Hoping to celebrate the craftmanship that sits behind these hand-woven fabrics, the collection's materials were sourced from all over India and provided by textile houses like Khadi India and Aaranya.
Despite the hopes of celebrating India's textile heritage and craftsmanship, the show was met with mixed reviews by attendees and viewers online. Muted hues of sky blue, white and sand characterized the collection, leading to further criticism by fans and guests who have since said that the collection's looks weren't entirely representative of Westwood's punk-inspired heritage and non-conformist ethos.
