When Is It Time to Ditch Your Makeup Products? Experts Weigh In

We all have that one makeup product we know we should probably toss, but somehow, we just can't bring ourselves to let go of it. Whether it's a favorite lipstick, eyeshadow with sentimental value (we're looking at you, Urban Decay "Naked" Palette) or the perfect foundation that's probably seen better days, it's hard to part with something that we get used to having in our beauty routine. However, holding onto expired or worn-out products can pose serious risks to your health, from harboring harmful bacteria and allergens to causing skin irritation.

Knowing when to say goodbye is essential to maintaining your skin's appearance and your makeup's performance. Below, we speak to experts in the beauty industry who are dishing out guidelines for when to toss your products and why it matters.

Expiration Dates

Expiration dates are real and ignoring them can lead to everything from skin irritation to bacterial infections. "Shelf lives for products can vary depending on the type and form. I typically tell consumers that after they open products, the one-year clock starts," says Ron Robinson, who is a cosmetic chemist and formulator for Rhode. "After that time, you should toss it." However, there are exceptions, especially with items that come into contact with your eyes. You can also check the packaging for the PAO or the "period after opening" date to see how long the brand recommends you should keep something for.

Eyeliner and Mascara

If you still hold onto your mascara from last year, it might be better for your eyes if you put it in the bin. "Products that are applied close to the eye area — like mascara and concealer — should be tossed after six months," says Robinson. "When your gel or liquid eyeliner is as dry as the Sahara Desert and no longer glides across the lids, it's done," states Amanda Gabbard, a professional makeup artist. No one wants an eye infection just because they held onto their favorite eyeliner for too long. When your mascara starts to dry up or clump, it's a sure sign that it's no longer safe to use. If your eyeliners are not gliding on as smoothly as they used to, it's time to toss and replace them.

Foundations and Concealers

Even if you love your favorite foundation, eventually you will need to utter that dreaded farewell — even your most trusted makeup can expire. "Depending on the brand, foundation and concealer can last anywhere from six months to a year," says Gabbard. If it smells like an old paint can or its texture changes, it's done. When your foundation starts oxidizing to a shade that no longer matches, that's another sign it's time for a new bottle.

Cream Products

Cream products — like blush, eyeshadow and highlighters — are trickier. They dry out faster than powders and should be tossed around the eight-month mark. "That dewy glow may turn into a mystery rash," warns Gabbard. If your cream blush is starting to separate or feels more like a paste than a silky-smooth texture, it's best to swap it out for a fresh one.

Powder Products

On the bright side, powders are your longer-lasting beauty best friends. "Powder eyeshadows, powder foundation, powder bronzers and powder blush are items we can feel good about holding onto for a year or two," Gabbard explains. As long as they're stored properly, these products won't go bad quickly.
