sacai's Chitose Abe Remixes Jean Paul Gaultier for Fall 2021 Couture Show

After showcasing his final show last year, Jean Paul Gaultier announced a new strategy for his eponymous label, appointing sacai's Chitose Abe as the brand's first guest designer. The Japanese creative has finally unveiled her creations for JPG, including a Nike VaporWaffle collaboration.

Arriving a year after delays due to the ongoing pandemic, the collection is a blend of Abe's hybrid construction style with Gaultier's signature corsets. The runway, which Gaultier himself sat front row to watch, featured a number of standout garments and accessories such as boots by Pierre Hardy and prints by celebrity tattooist Dr. Woo.

Gaultier's pinstriped suits are reworked with sheer fabrics and deconstructed to create a new Abe-style silhouette, which is kept together with corset tops. Dr. Woo's illustrations appear on a series of garments contrasted with tent-like trench coat gowns. Further standouts feature a voluminous bomber jacket worn atop a tonal dress paired with boots in the same color. Knitwear and denim items follow in a similar theme while the much-talked-about Nike sneakers are worn with blue bodysuits and dresses. The show closed with the Japanese designer taking the stage to bow in a T-shirt reading "Enfant Terribles," a term referencing Gaultier's time.
