Chanel's FW21 Couture Collection Is a Work of Art

Having shown a punk-themed collection for Cruise 2021, Virginie Viard has returned to the runway once again for Chanel's Fall/Winter 2021 Couture show. Held at Paris' Palais Galliera, the designer took inspiration from works of art for the latest range.

"It was when I rediscovered these portraits of Gabrielle Chanel dressed up in black or white 1880s-style dresses, that I immediately thought about tableaux," Viard shared in a press release. "Works by Berthe Morisot, Marie Laurencin and Édouard Manet. There are impressionist-inspired dresses, skirts that look like paintings and a long white satin dress punctuated with black bows like Morisot's..."

Tweed dominates the entire collection on a series of coats, skirt suits, dresses and more. Referencing splashes of paint, garments arrive in a variety of color themes. Standout pieces include a long jacket with yellow, pink and white floral motifs throughout. "There are dresses embroidered with water lilies, a jacket in a black tweed crafted from feathers with red and pink flowers," Viard added. Contrasting the textured designs are clean-cut single-breasted jackets with tonal trousers seen on models like Soo Joo Park, while actor and Chanel ambassador Margaret Qualley takes the finale in a stunning white puffed sleeve dress with a sequined hat and veil.
