Studio Ghibli recently took to Twitter with an illustrated mash-up of one of its most famous films, My Neighbor Totoro, and Pixar favorite Monsters, Inc.

The post quickly caused a frenzy among fans of Ghibli and Pixar alike, fueling rumors that the duo might be collaborating on a project. Animated movie buffs noted that a team-up wouldn't be farfetched -- in 2010, Totoro appeared in Pixar's Toy Story 3. Additionally, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki and former Pixar head John Lasseter have expressed their mutual respect for each other. (Lasseter has since exited Pixar and Disney due to sexual harassment allegations.)

The artist behind the Ghibli-Pixar crossover has yet to be named. The work was previously seen hanging at Studio Ghibli's offices in Tokyo, pictured in an anime industry documentary broadcast in Japan on NHK in December 2019.

Stay tuned for updates on a possible Studio Ghibli x Pixar collaboration.
