Fashion Is Entering Its Jurassic Era, According to FW25 Runways

Every fashion week season, we begin to spot similarities emerge on the runway. For Fall/Winter 2025, it appeared that several brands and designers took inspiration -- knowingly or not -- from the Jurassic era. While furs and big boots are pretty commonplace during Winter, something about this season's colorways and textures felt a little bit different.

Kicking things off at Paris Fashion Week Men's, we were exposed to the exaggerated fringes of Rick Owens, whose chainmail textures definitely transported us to the past, followed by a furry overload courtesy of sacai and UGG. Next, we made our way to Copenhagen Fashion Week, where Forza Collective's womenswear showcase evolved the fur we know and love, followed by a brief stopover at Berlin Fashion Week to see Marlon Ferry's masterclass in dino-skins.

The trend likely stems from a combination of cyclical Fall/Winter fashion -- particularly the return of vintage fur -- but also feels rooted in rebellion. Following the rise of brat summer, feral girl fall and a general rejection of all things demure and mindful, we're starting to embrace our wild sides and as a result, it's beginning to reflect in our fashion choices. Outside of fashion, fads like the carnivore diet made a viral return a la TikTok last year, suggesting more of an appetite for animals in more ways than one...

Below, we chart the brands and designers going (safely) pre-historic this fashion week season. Stay tuned for more examples coming soon from New York, London, Milan and Paris.

Rick Owens

The star of the Rick Owens show this season was undoubtedly the designer's oversized fringe boots. Created in collaboration with rising Parisian designer and CGI artist Victor Clavelly, the swishy silhouettes were crafted from feathered leather and chainmail, resulting in incredible texture and movement on the runway. Dubbed the "Ostrich" boots, the silhouette had a distinctly pre-historic feel to them, with the upper seemingly mimicking the texture of dinosaur scales or Jurassic reptiles. The texture was also utilized to create "chainmail" skirts, worn over trousers during the show.

sacai

sacai presented a similar footwear shape during its Fall/Winter 2025 showcase, revolving around the concept of "wildness." Inspired by Maurice Sendak's famous 1963 children's novel, Where the Wild Things Are, this season's collection explored themes of wilderness, freedom and "untamed nature." Teaming up with UGG for its new season footwear, the collection was elevated by extremely furry boots that wouldn't feel out of place on a caveman.

Maison Mihara Yasuhiro

Maison Mihara Yasuhiro's FW25 collection made its debut at PFW this season, fusing playful silhouettes with unexpected detailing. The animal-inspired accessories piqued our interest the most, though, particularly the T-rex and Triceratops silhouettes. Arriving in hues of caramel and grey, the sheepskin leather bags felt distinctly Jurassic, perhaps signaling that fashion will be taking more inspiration from the time period in the future.

Forza Collective

Forza Collective appeared to take a similar view, presenting its FW25 collection in Copenhagen. While the collection looked to the roaring '20s for inspiration, a few furry silhouettes instantly transported us to the age of the dinosaurs. Featuring oversized fur coats and hot pants, the brown, red and yellow coloring of the furs felt relatively bird-like, not totally unlike the silhouettes worn by Wilma and Pebbles in The Flinstones.

Marlon Ferry

Eventually, the Jurassic trend seemingly made its way to Berlin, evidenced by these dinosaur-inspired textures at the Marlon Ferry showcase. Developed through the use of innovative techniques and artistic innovations, these specific looks were created through added latex, 3D printing and fabric manipulation. As a whole, the collection explored themes of war, societal collapse and rebirth, looking at our human "capacity to rebuild and thrive, even in adversity," which seemingly reflects the wider attitudes of the fashion community at this ever-turbulent time.
