Sandy Liang Gave Monchhichi the Ultimate Sandy Makeover

First, we fell for the charm of Sonny Angels, then the Smiski figures stole our hearts. But the latest must-have? Monchhichi. Unlike the tiny Sonny Angels or the sneaky glow-in-the-dark Smiski figures, this plush, huggable doll is (physically) bigger -- and even cuter. Upping the ante further, Sandy Liang, queen of all things cute and girly, has designed her very own Monchhichi.

Liang's take on the cult Japanese toy monkey created in the ‘70s is (as you'd expect) oh-so-charming and styled to perfection. Dressed in Liang's signature uniform skort in dark navy, the flower power 2.0 scrunchie in ballet pink, Mary Jane double strap pointes in red satin and a checkered fleece, straight from the Liang archive. Monchhichi is giving Liang a run for her money to become the ultimate "Sandy Girl," if you ask us.

The first look at the adorable doll came via Hypebeast Magazine Issue #34: The Uniform Issue, which explores the concept of a uniform, whether ascribed or chosen, as an expression of who we are to the rest of the world. In the print magazine, Liang speaks to Nicolaila Rips about her lifelong obsession with Monchhichi, why uniform dressing appeals to her, and how she uses nostalgia to create something that feels both familiar and fresh. The playful photographs by Michael Kusumadjaja are also next level cute.

The Monchhichi x Sandy Liang collab is available to purchase exclusively at Sandy Liang's New York store at 28 Orchard Street, and via the website.

You can also pick up a copy of Hypebeast Magazine Issue #34: The Uniform Issue with one of two limited-edition covers: the Peggy Gou cover available for purchase here, and a second with artist Sterling Ruby available here.
