Tweed Gets Trendy at Chanel's Manchester Métiers d'art Show

At long last, Chanel's Métiers d'art runway has made its way into the world, after the showcase took place in Manchester on December 7. Setting up on Thomas Street, in the north of Manchester city, the show featured a star-studded guest list, which included the likes of Aitch, Kristen Stewart, Jenna Coleman, Alexa Chung and Gene Gallagher.

The collection itself took influence from the styling of Gabrielle Chanel, with Virginie Viard explaining that "Tweed is central to this collection. I thought a lot about Gabrielle Chanel but I didn't want to recreate Coco's look when she was wearing the Duke of Westminster's jackets. I took my cue from the Coco who brought colour to her tweeds. I added a vibrant, pop spirit to them."

As a result, the collection offered a contemporary, more youthful approach to Chanel's signatures, drawing from Manchester's distinctive spirit. "For me, Manchester is the city of music," adds Viard. Reflected through a vibrant color palette of salmon pink, apple green, mustard, red and rust, the collection featured classic Chanel pieces like tweed sets, pearl necklaces and chain-edged bags, with subtle nods to punk, rock and sixties fashion.

Elsewhere, teapots, vinyl records and flowers added playful touches in celebration of British design, paired with Shetland and cashmere fabrics, alongside references to Manchester's music scene, football heritage and the English countryside.
