Netflix Is Testing a New Feature To Prevent Password Sharing

Netflix is cracking down on login sharing with a new security feature that discourages joint accounts. When the streaming platform detects an account is being used by someone other than the paying owner, it will send a security code to said owner via text or email. Anyone using the account will be prompted to verify their identity by entering the code.

The new security feature is being tested in countries around the world for an unspecified period of time. "This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so," a Netflix spokesperson told The Verge. Of course, the update won't entirely restrict login sharing -- an account holder could technically send anyone the security code as soon as it comes through. Still, it makes the prospect of a friends and family account a bit of a headache.
