Jenna Ortega Reveals The Real Reason She Quit 'Scream'
info@hypebae.com (Hypebae) Mon, 07 Apr 2025 HypebaeWhen the first official Scream trailer with Jenna Ortega debuted, fans could not wait to see Ortega as Tara Carpenter on the big screen. It was the horror film franchise's first time taking place in New York -- and it was during Halloween, making Ortega's Scream debut worth the hype. But after just two films, she left the franchise. In a new interview with The Cut, she opens up about her decision to leave.
At the time, many suspected the star had left the franchise due to scheduling conflicts, as she was also starring in Netflix's hit shows, Wednesday and You. But, "It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling," Ortega confessed.
"The Melissa [Barrera] stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart." The "Melissa stuff" was all anyone could talk about as the actor publicly advocated for those in Palestine and was fired by Spyglass Media, the production company backing the franchise.
Many suspected that Barrera was fired for her stance and Ortega quitting the day after was her form of standing in solidarity. According to her interview, she absolutely left for that reason.
When Spyglass was asked about firing Barrera, the company told Variety, "Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."
"If Scream VII wasn’t going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn’t seem like the right move for me in my career at the time."
