Artist Rachael Tarravechia announces her latest New York exhibit, "Water on Velvet."

Opening May 8, "Water on Velvet" explores Tarravechia's self-perception. Inspired by immersive apartment tours on Zillow, an American real estate website, Tarravechia pondered on the capabilities of the internet -- in relation to herself. She would never step foot in any of these homes, yet its most intimate areas, from the bathroom to bedrooms, were available to whomever wanted to digitally peruse.

The moment in her Brooklyn apartment brought Tarravechia to an interesting epiphany. "After years of intentionally restricting her eating and constantly bodychecking herself in bathroom mirrors," the press release shared, "these spaces, which should prioritize hygiene and self-care, have become tainted with malice and discomfort."

Confronting the restrictive realities of womanhood, the Brooklyn-based painter brings these emotions to the canvas with pieces like "International Princess" and "Negroni." The press release continued: "What should be sanctuaries of cleanliness and self-care become battlegrounds for inner turmoil, each tile and mirror bearing witness to the silent struggles hidden behind closed doors."

Through each canvas on view at  Ceysson & Bénétière, Tarravechia encourages the viewer to question societal "pressures to erase our true selves in pursuit of an unattainable ideal. In a world where authenticity is often sacrificed for superficiality, her work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing our flaws and reclaiming our identities." Ultimately forcing the viewer to "uncover the truth behind the façade and rediscover the beauty in our imperfections."

Visit "Water on Velvet" at Ceysson & Bénétière, from May 8 to June 14.
