The 990 is an iconic streetwear style that has reigned supreme across major East Coast cities since its launch. This past summer, New Balance launched its Sounds of an Icon series, visiting Philadelphia, Washington DC and Baltimore to dive into the expansive history of the style. Now, the brand is continuing these efforts by returning to these cities of cultural influence — this time, New Balance visits Baltimore for a photography and arts workshop and gallery experience with local artist Shan Wallace.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Shan’s work brings us into her community and honors the creative energy that characterizes the city. She aims to preserve and showcase the historical relevance of the city through this work, which uplifts the many innovative thinkers that have come out of Baltimore.

To celebrate these Baltimore voices, the Sounds of an Icon series will land at Nomünomü, an arts collaborative. Here, Shan will guide workshops that will include real images from her work, inviting guests to collage and collaborate with her vision, all while hearing about Shan’s creative process. Clips from her past projects will be projected throughout the workshop, allowing attendees to get a sneak peek into her craft and bringing the Sounds of an Icon digital experience to life.

The immersive gallery will display the rich history of Baltimore through the lens of Shan, showing off the facets of the city that are not always highlighted. The gallery will have an interactive map for guests to denote their own Baltimore hotspots, as well as a 990 shoe display showing the different iterations of the model. Guests can also enjoy tea provided by Cuples Tea House, a Black woman-owned boutique tea house specializing in premium loose-leaf teas.

The gallery will be unveiled on March 2, and will be open to the public. Following its opening, the public art and photography workshop will be held from 12-3 pm that day. Tools will be available for guests during the workshop as supplies last.
