The state of California in the U.S. kicks off the New Year with a safety law that will benefit women worldwide.

This post contains triggers.

Known as the home of Los Angeles, a major party mecca, California has just required most bars and nightclubs to "have drug testing kits available," reported ABC7. The goal is to "help customers know if their drink has been spiked" by providing a testing kit for any suspected foul play. To receive this kit, attendees must notify the bartender and they will be provided with a kit including "a strip, sticker, or straw that detect common roofie or date-rape drugs like ketamine or GHB."

As many women unfortunately know, spiking of drink with roofies, and date rapeoccurs rampantly. So much so, that women are taught to never pick up their drink after putting it down and to always cover their drinks with their palm while sipping. Many bartenders and nightlife employees have had to take these safety precautions into their own hands over the years, as many reported to ABC7.

"There are many women, especially, who will come in and they'll have to use the restroom and they'll ask me to watch their drink," a San Francisco bartender told the publication. Having to take matters into her own hands, she reported "I'll say, 'I'm going to take your drink and put it behind the bar and just put a glass of water there so they don't lose their seat." Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal added: "We have a crisis that's taking place that's resulting in sexual assault, that's targeting primarily women and members of the LGBTQ communities."

Hopefully, this new development will increase safety in nightlife and spread nationally to protect women.

In other news, male birth control is almost here ladies...
