Facebook is adding a new "discovery engine" to compete with TikTok, according to an internal memo from April, which was shared with The Verge.

In the forthcoming changes, Facebook will show more recommended content instead of your typical posts from either people you follow or are friends with. In the leaked memo, Meta executive and head of the Facebook app, Tom Allison, wrote, "In this note, I want to introduce the concept of Facebook as a 'discovery engine,' which is a helpful mental model to frame the current focus of our long-term strategy. It also helps contextualize our product priorities, which we'll continue to evolve over time to emphasize our near-term focus areas."

The new feed is an effort to "make Reels successful," "build world-class recommendations technology" and "unlock messaging-based sharing." Additionally, Facebook plans to make Messenger part of the Facebook app once again after it was split into two different applications in 2014.
