Andrew Bird and Phoebe Bridgers have reimagined Emily Dickinson's 1861 poem "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain" and turned it into a breathtaking song with the same title.

It was Bird's idea to turn the track into music. The indie rock multi-instrumentalist revealed that the song lyrics, which are pulled directly from the poem, are related to the themes presented in his latest album, Inside Problems, which he dropped in June. It was also Bird's idea to have Bridgers featured on the track.

"I came across this Emily Dickinson poem and found it to be the most vivid description of an inner world I’ve ever encountered," he wrote on Instagram. "It became an inspiration for the songs on Inside Problems. I sent a demo to Phoebe Bridgers and she said something to the effect of 'this is right up my alley' and so, here we are. Thanks to Tony Berg for bringing us together. 'I felt a Funeral, in my Brain' out now."

Bird and Bridgers were granted permission for the song by Dickinson’s publisher at Harvard University Press.
