The Chicest Paint Color Ideas for a Bathroom Makeover

Painting your bathroom walls with the right color can make all the difference, especially when you're looking to enliven a small space. Whether you consider yourself a minimalist that sticks to subtle, neutral shades, or an adventurous decorator who embraces rich, vibrant hues, this guide may help you determine the perfect paint color for your shower or powder room.

Natalie Ebel, the co-founder of new direct-to-consumer paint company Backdrop, gives HYPEBAE some tips for repainting a bathroom. "I find bathrooms to be great areas for going bold with color and adding a bit of personality. They’re fully enclosed and separate spaces which give you license," she says. To strategically enhance a small bathroom, Ebel suggests painting the space all-over with a dark color in the brand's semi-gloss finish -- this will reflect the light and help create the illusion of a larger space. If you prefer light colors, Ebel recommends shades such as Backdrop's Harajuku Morning (a light pink with peachy undertones), On Tour (a soft, pale blue) and Natural Habitat (a light yellowish green). "Light colors [contrasting] with dark accents can make a room feel bigger," she explains, adding, "Bathrooms usually benefit from large mirrors, which naturally make a room feel bigger as well."

The Best Paint Colors for a Modern Bathroom

Surf Camp (Dark Blue With Green Undertones)

"This dark blue paint color is a perennial bestseller and looks great in nearly all spaces. I love this in bathrooms because it is bold, nuanced and pairs well with white bathroom fixtures."

After Hours (Soft Charcoal Black)

"It can seem counterintuitive to go for black in the bathroom, but this soft charcoal creates such an amazing contrast particularly if your sink, tiles and shower are white. I really love when people go for something like this color in their bathroom. It feels very elevated and looks even better in semi-gloss, because the light is reflective on the color and makes the space look bigger."

Kismet (Dark Dutch Green)

"This color is a deep, moody green that helps fixtures and mirrors pop. I especially like it with gold or bronze tones."

Disco Nap (Light Acid Yellow)

"This light acid yellow paint color has a lot of personality and makes a statement."

36 Hours in Marrakesh (Earthy Warm Pink)

"This warm pink shade has become a go-to color for bathrooms. It really brings life to a small space, and it looks great in all light settings."

Modern Love (Warm Muted Pink)

"Not too pink but still pink, Modern Love is one of our bestselling pink paint colors. It looks great anywhere."

Ghost Ranch (Warm Terracotta)

"This terracotta hue is an earthy and nuanced color that's great for bathrooms. It also plays nicely with common white elements, such as sinks and showers."

Moon Light (Warm Off-White)

"This off-white color offers a perfect neutral backdrop when you want to add color accents to your bathroom."

Supermoon (Pure Bright White)

"This is one of our most popular colors -- my own home is painted in Supermoon. It’s a pure, bright white that helps create a timeless look you’ll never get tired of."
