Megan Thee Stallion is finally receiving justice as the rapper's assailant, Tory Lanez, has been sentenced to prison for ten years after shooting her.

The Grammy award-winning artist was shot by Lanez, who's legal name is Daystar Peterson, three years ago, in August 2020 at Kylie Jenner's house and quickly became subject to harassment and misogynoir -- amplifying a cultural conversation around the mistreatment of Black women. The Houston native not only shared her personal experience in an interview with Gayle King, but penned a New York Times essay exposing our society's systemic dismissal and perpetuation of Black women's pain.

The trial initially began on December 12, 2022 in Los Angeles where Megan bravely took the stand. After two weeks, the Los Angeles jury found Lanez guilty of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion and was convicted of three felony charges -- assault with a semi-automatic handgun, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Although Lanez faced more than 20 years in prison, his prosecutors negotiated for 13.

According to TMZ, Lanez addressed the court prior to sentencing, claiming that he still considers Megan as his "friend" and "someone I still care for dearly to this day," as legal affairs reporter Meghann Cuniff transcribed while in the courtroom.
