A 3-Digit Dial Code Connecting Callers With the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Is Launching

Seeking mental health assistance just got a little easier. Starting in July, a new three-digit dial code is launching, which will connect callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Rather than relying on the usual 10-digit number, callers will simply be able to dial or text 988. From there, a trained counselor will offer assistance.

988 will be launching across the U.S. However, so far, only four states -- Colorado, Washington, Nevada, and Virginia -- "have enacted comprehensive funding plans," according to NBC News.

"We have all of the technology," Jennifer Piver, the executive director of Mental Health America of Greenville County in South Carolina, told the outlet. "We do not have the funding for staff, for salaries."

The new hotline doesn't go into effect until July 16, therefore, for the time being, if you or a loved one are seeking help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
