The Academy has disclosed that Will Smith "refused" to be escorted out of the ceremony after slapping Chris Rock on stage.

In a statement acquired by E! News, the Oscars said: "Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently."

It has also revealed that the actor violated "the Academy's Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy." The Board of Governors has yet to decide Smith's consequences. As per reports, he will be notified 15 days prior to a vote regarding his actions and will be given the chance to produce a "written response to defend himself." The meeting will reportedly take place on April 18.

"Mr. Smith's actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television," the statement continued. "Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event."

Stay tuned while we wait for more updates on the situation.
