These 10 Hair Color Trends Are Going To Take Over Spring 2021

For those who are contemplating a hair makeover for spring, get inspired by some of the biggest hair color trends of the season. While low-maintenance hairstyles pretty much dominated all of last year, moving forward into 2021, expect a shift toward hair with "extra shine and dimension" -- as celebrity hair colorist Bianca Hillier tells HYPEBAE. For the spring season in particular, Hillier predicts that shimmering gold tones and balayage hair -- the popular hair-dyeing technique that gives you those soft, natural-looking highlights -- will be all the rage. "Gold [is highly reflective], so it gives the appearance of ultra-shine," she elaborates.

Despite the careful reopening of personal care businesses, as we continue to navigate the pandemic and make fewer salon visits, those with dyed hair will want to make sure to maintain the color and keep their hair healthy with at-home treatments. Hillier has a few tips: "I've instructed all my clients to continuously treat their hair with the Olaplex No.0 Intensive Bond Building Treatment and No.3 Hair Perfector to repair the hair from the inside out. [This combination is] scientifically proven to make hair three times stronger and give 68 percent more repair. Healthy hair allows your professional stylist to achieve the best results." Adapting to COVID-related restrictions, many hair colorists, like Hillier, are also exploring new ways of helping clients with their hair needs remotely. "I've created FaceTime consultations and custom color kits for my clients, [including] all the tools necessary for a seamless, non-professional application," the Los Angeles-based hair expert says.

Whether you are bookmarking ideas for your next salon appointment, or looking for inspiration for a DIY dye job, read on for 10 of the hottest spring hair colors for 2021 according to Hillier.

Golden Blonde

Chances are you have recently seen Billie Eilish's newly dyed golden blonde hair on Instagram. Well, if you are loving the singer's hair transformation, now is a good time to try out this hair color yourself. "It's something bright but definitely not brassy," Hillier speaks of the trend. "Gold [is highly reflective], so your hair will be glimmering throughout spring and summer."

Butterscotch Brunette

"A brunette's dream is to have the warmth [in their hair] with a butterscotch glow," Hillier says. The star hair colorist loves this beautiful, dimensional look -- especially for the spring season -- for being "warm but never red."

Fantasy Pink

For those who enjoy a statement hair color, consider dyeing your hair pink. "[The shade is] something temporary and easy to rinse out," Hillier explains. "This allows for a fun change of pace without a huge commitment."

Grainy Blonde

A trend you'll be seeing everywhere this spring season, ash brown hair is perfect for those "who love a natural look and hate maintenance," the hair colorist tells us. "A grainy blonde has a wheat-y tone and gives just enough shine to not fall too flat."

Juicy Black

Sleek, glossy jet black hair -- as seen here on model Ganna Bogdan, one of Hillier's clients -- is another great idea for those who have been contemplating changing up their look. "It’s juicy, it’s shiny and it’s always a vibe," the colorist says.

Pastels to Platinum

"Platinum is back, and it’s not so frosty this time around," Hillier notes. Ideal for those thinking of exploring candy-colored hair but unsure about fully committing to the look, this spring trend will allow your "fantasy colors to fade out and return to blonde spectrum."

Blonde-Meets-Brunette

If you can't seem to decide on a hair color, this trend may just be a brilliant option for you. "This isn’t blonde, but it is also not dark enough to be considered brunette," Hillier says. "This is a perfect in-between for clients who aren’t ready to make the plunge in any specific direction. Keep it on the cooler side for an extra natural appearance."

Calm but Bright "Money Piece"

"Never chunky because we like it classy, but something bright will be inviting," the hair colorist says of the face-framing highlights. "We call it 'money piece' because this is what the client sees every day, and this is what they’re paying for."

Matte Brunette

For those who prefer classic shades, Hillier recommends going for matte brunette, adding that the hair color is "always a chic aesthetic." The colorist further comments on the spring trend: "It reads edgy and doesn’t fade too warm."

Strawberry Blonde

Looking ahead to the hottest months of the year, Hillier predicts that "warm blondes [will be] totally in" this summer. "I’m loving a strawberry hue," she says, "just a hint of red warmth to give a spicy sheen."
