Sotheby’s Holds Its First Auction Dedicated to Female Artists

Next month, Sotheby's is gearing up to stage its first-ever auction dedicated to female artists across the centuries, who have often been categorised or marginalised by history due to their gender. “The divisive classification ‘women artists’ but never ‘male artists’ is at the heart of a debate that has been disputed for decades, and yet continues to be a trap that is so often fallen into. Female artists should not be pigeon-holed nor segregated, which is precisely why we are holding a sale that appears to be doing exactly that – in order to turn the tables and open up this debate. Yes, these artists are women, but more importantly, they are artists,” says Marina Ruiz Colomer, Contemporary Art Specialist based in London.

The sale will explore artists across 400 years, covering everything from paintings to sculptures. The Sotheby's (Women) Artists sale will take place online starting May 20, and will run throughout May 27, and will also be exhibited at Sotheby's New Bond Street location between May 22 and May 27.
